Introduction to the Summer 2020
Music Theory Puzzle Challenge
VERY IMPORTANT to note that this is NOT meant to be used as a comprehensive step-by-step introduction to music theory! These puzzles are not sequential, however, I have provided brief overviews including written (with optional verbal recordings, for those who learn better aurally) as well as visual synopses to help introduce topics that may be unfamiliar. If you have already dipped your toes into basic music theory, I suggest you refer to these overviews if you get stuck on any section.
There are 4 Sections. Each section will consist of a list of terms and notes (written, verbal and visual) which may be used to solve the puzzles featured on the bottom of each section page.
Comprehensive (complete) instructions will be clearly stated on the response sheet in case you need to reference them again.
Section 1 is all about scales. The puzzle for this section will be to solve a cipher puzzle. Once you have decoded the 6 ciphers please provide a short definition that clearly describes the revealed term.
Section 2 covers triads. The puzzle for section 2 is a picture puzzle. You will find a picture that you must accurately label and then use that as a reference to build 6 selected triads on a staff in treble clef.
Section 3 looks at cadences. The puzzle for section 3 is a crossword puzzle... the twist is that you are not given written clues. The 9 clues will be in the form of a written and corresponding audio excerpt.
Section 4 is the FINAL section and delves into transposition. The puzzle for this will be to transpose an excerpt on a staff in bass clef 3 different ways.
I have created this Music Theory Puzzle challenge for 2 reasons: (1) to allow YOU (the student) to see and experience how I structure topics and (2) a TUITION DISCOUNT on my 6 weeks of music theory series for more info continue reading "Why should I take on this challenge?"

Why should I take on this challenge?
One reason you could do this challenge is just for fun... ha (music theory, fun?).
The main reason you should consider doing this challenge is for a TUITION DISCOUNT on my 6 weeks of music theory series. If you are interested student (ANY LEVEL - complete newbie, prospective high school AP Music Theory, college student, music theory enthusiast, etc.) I am offering 6 weeks of music theory tutoring from selected topics:
The tuition discount** will be award based on two main factors: (1) completion and (2) accuracy. It's pretty straightforward, the more puzzles you solve the lower your tuition will be.
*I will NOT be disclosing tuition prices publicly. Interested students - whether or not you're sure you can afford it - should fill out the Google Form below, after that I can respond to the provided email and give you an estimate. If you do have financial concerns, I HIGHLY suggest attempting the puzzles because even if you don't correctly solve the puzzles you can still get a discounted rate for applying effort.
*I can not offer "free" classes. To keep food on the table, lights on, and gas in my car I have to charge a tuition for the 6 weeks of music theory series. However, keep in mind if you were to correctly solve all 4 sections you would be getting a HEAVILY DISCOUNTED tuition rate... and again, fill out the Google Form if you want an estimate.
