Terms: transposition, instrumental transposition, intervallic transposition, concert pitch
Section 4: Transposition NotesTranspositions can occur several ways, but can be divided into two larger groups. Transposition involves shifting a primary line by any interval in any direction.
Concert pitch: The written pitches match the sounding pitches. Instruments that are concert pitched (sometimes referred to as C instruments) include:
Instruments not in “C” or concert pitch are divided into several key large families: Bb, Eb, and F instruments. For this section we’ll just look at Bb and F instruments. Bb Instruments are written UP a whole step (2 semitones) from concert (sounding) pitch. For example, when the note D5 is written, the instrument sounds a C5.
F instruments are written a 5th ABOVE sounding pitch. For example, a written G5 sounds a concert C5.
Intervallic Transposition is seen quite often in music such as in sequences. It is very important to STRICTLY FOLLOW the given interval when transposition to avoid errors. For example, a minor 3rd below an A2 would not be a Gb2 (because G is one line or a 2nd away from A therefore the interval created is an augmented 2nd) the correct note would be an F#2. |
The verbal notes follow the written ones so I highly recommend you follow along with BOTH the written and visual notes while listening along.
